Earth and Moon seen from veeeeery far
Friday, July 18th, 2008This video is amazing: it shows the Earth and the Moon viewed from 50 million kilometers! The video was assembled from pictures taken every 15 minutes by the Deep Impact probe, launched by NASA on January 12, 2005 to study the Tempel comet , through the explosion of a piece of probe into the comet.
After the successful experiment, Deep Impact was redirected by the U.S. space agency to meet Hartley 2 comet (what should happen in 2010) and, on its way, to investigate extra-solar planets. This new mission was given the name of EPOXI ( “Extrasolar Planet Observation and Deep Impact Extended Investigation”).
While it doesn’t arrive in the comet, the probe is taking many photos with its two powerful telescopes. Like theses pictures that turned to this video. This is how the aliens must see Earth when they’re on their way here …
